The Income Tax Return filing season is upon us, and understanding which ITR form applies to you is crucial for compliance. ITR-2 is one of the most commonly used forms for taxpayers with slightly complex income structures beyond salary and interest income.

Who Should File ITR-2

ITR-2 is designated for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income from business or profession. This form is mandatory if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Individuals or HUFs earning income from capital gains (short-term or long-term) from sale of shares, property, mutual funds, or other assets
  • Those who own more than one house property or have brought forward losses from house property
  • Taxpayers who are directors in a company
  • Individuals holding unlisted equity shares in any company
  • Those with foreign assets or foreign income, including from overseas bank accounts or property
  • Individuals with agricultural income exceeding Rs 5,000 per year
  • Residents who are not ordinarily resident (RNOR) or non-residents (NR)

Salaried individuals with only one house property, salary income, and interest from savings accounts should use ITR-1 instead. ITR-2 becomes necessary when your income sources expand beyond these basic categories.

Last Date for Filing ITR-2 for AY 2026-27

For Assessment Year 2026-27, which corresponds to the Financial Year 2025-26 (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026), the standard deadline for filing ITR-2 is July 31, 2026. This applies to individual taxpayers who are not required to get their accounts audited.

However, taxpayers should note that filing within the original deadline allows you to file a revised return if you discover any errors later. Missing the July deadline means you can still file a belated return by December 31, 2026, but you will face penalties and lose the option to file a revised return.

The Income Tax Department may extend these deadlines, as has happened in previous years, but taxpayers should not rely on extensions and aim to file before July 31, 2026.

Documents Required for ITR-2 Filing

Before beginning the filing process, gather these essential documents:

  • Form 16 from your employer (if applicable)
  • Bank statements showing interest earned
  • Capital gains statements from share trading accounts or mutual fund houses
  • Property sale/purchase documents if you had real estate transactions
  • Home loan interest certificates if claiming deductions
  • Investment proofs for Section 80C, 80D and other deductions
  • Foreign asset details and foreign income statements
  • Previous year's ITR acknowledgment
  • PAN card and Aadhaar details

How to File ITR-2 Online

The Income Tax Department has made online filing mandatory for most taxpayers. Here's the step-by-step process:

Log in to the income tax e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in using your PAN as the user ID. If you're a first-time user, register with your PAN, Aadhaar, and other basic details.

Navigate to the 'e-File' menu and select 'Income Tax Return'. Choose Assessment Year 2026-27 and ITR-2 as your form type. Select whether you want to file online or offline.

For online filing, you have two options: use the pre-filled data or enter information manually. The pre-filled option automatically populates salary details from Form 16, interest income from banks, and dividend income based on data available with the department. Verify this information carefully.

Enter your income details under the appropriate heads: salary, house property, capital gains, and other sources. Make sure to include all sources of income, even if TDS was already deducted.

Claim your deductions under Chapter VIA, including 80C for investments, 80D for health insurance, and others as applicable. Enter details of taxes already paid through TDS, advance tax, or self-assessment tax.

If you have capital gains, you'll need to provide detailed information about the asset sold, purchase date, sale date, cost of acquisition, and sale consideration. The form will automatically calculate your tax liability.

Verify all entered information carefully, especially bank account details for refunds. Choose your verification method: Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or sending a signed ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Center within 120 days.

After successful verification, you'll receive an acknowledgment. Keep this for your records and for any future correspondence with the tax department.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many taxpayers make errors while filing ITR-2. Avoid these common pitfalls: not reporting foreign assets or income, missing capital gains from mutual fund redemptions, claiming ineligible deductions, incorrect reporting of exempt income, and failing to link PAN with Aadhaar before filing.
